Netherlands continue their World Cup qualifying campaign away to Bulgaria on the 25th of March before hosting Italy in a friendly three days later.
The injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Jeffrey Bruma have forced Blind to look at alternative centre-backs and he has decided to call-up Lazio’s Wesley Hoedt and Ajax youngster Matthijs de Ligt for the first time. De Ligt has only recently turned 17 but has been excellent for Ajax this season.
Also included are Wesley Sneijder, Jens Toornstra and Tonny Vilhena, but there is no place for Luuk de Jong, Jetro Willems, Eljero Elia or Davy Propper.
The full squad is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Jasper Cillessen (Barcelona), Michel Vorm (Tottenham Hotspur), Jeroen Zoet (PSV).
Defenders: Daley Blind (Manchester United), Wesley Hoedt (Lazio), Rick Karsdorp (Feyenoord), Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax), Bruno Martins Indi (Stoke City), Kenny Tete (Ajax), Joël Veltman (Ajax), Nick Viergever (Ajax), Stefan de Vrij (Lazio).
Midfielders: Davy Klaassen (Ajax), Wesley Sneijder (Galatasaray), Kevin Strootman (AS Roma), Jens Toornstra (Feyenoord), Tonny Vilhena (Feyenoord), Georginio Wijnaldum (Liverpool).
Attackers: Steven Berghuis (Feyenoord), Memphis Depay (Olympique Lyon), Bas Dost (Sporting Lissabon), Vincent Janssen (Tottenham Hotspur), Jeremain Lens (Fenerbahçe), Quincy Promes (Spartak Moskou), Arjen Robben (Bayern München)
What kind of sick joke is this, ake and van aanholt out, a 17 years old in!!!!
Must say…I’m surprised! When did that back line grow so large? And still (surprise, surprise) a few call-ups of people that shouldn’t be there!
Does anybody else know what Blind is thinking? Guess we are back to the 4-3-3
Viergever and De Ligt shouldn’t be in the squad. De ligt has a good future ahead of him but why not let him play for the U19 that spot could be used to bring in a left back which for some reason they only brought in Blind… Van Anholt, Ake, Kongolo, Williams one of them? Also no idea why he keeps bringing Berguis, we have 4 strong wingers already. Tete hasn’t really played although Ajax look way better with him instead of Veltman
We all know dad will start his son (sadly), but Nick Viergever instead of Erik Pieters as the other LB? A joke. Blind sees the world through tinted red Ajax glasses.
And not one of the midfielders chosen are true defensive midfielders. Marten De Roon should be in the squad instead of Tete (no need for 3 right backs).
