Tuttosport has named Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt as the winner of the 2018 Golden Boy award.

The 19-year-old has beaten off competition from Justin Kluivert (AS Roma), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) and Patrick Cutrone (AC Milan) to take the prestigious award.

De Ligt succeed’s Kylian Mbappe, who took the award last year, and is the first ever defender to be named Golden Boy. He is also the first Dutchman to receive it since Rafael van der Vaart back in 2003.

Van der Vaart was the first winner of the prize and was succeeded by names such as Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney, Paul Pogba, Isco and Lionel Messi.
