The Dutch international ended a difficult 18-month spell in Manchester last week by signing for French side Lyon. After the deal, Jose Mourinho was full of praise for Memphis and confirmed that the winger could return to Old Trafford one day as he is, “potentially a very good player.”

Speaking to OL TV, Memphis certainly holds no grudge against the coach, who left him on the sidelines for much of this season. He said, “His words were nice. In Manchester, I always worked as I had to. For me personally, it wasn’t all that easy, I needed to play. But we didn’t have a bad relationship.

“He’s a great coach and a great person. Now we’ll see here how I play. In any case, I think he has said good things about me.”

Memphis made a cameo, his first game in a Lyon shirt last weekend in a 3-1 win against Marseille, and looks forward to continuing with his new team. “I feel very good, in top form. My first week was good, training went very well, and little by little I’m getting back into the rhythm.

“Now I think I’m ready to start a game as of the next match. I’m training hard, my fitness is good. I think I can push for a starting place for the next game.”

Memphis will hope to start for his new club on Saturday when they face Lille.

I'm a digital/social marketer out of Chicago. I grew up loving Dutch football - total football is the only way to play. I support PSV in the Eredivisie, and whatever team has the most Dutch guys on it in any other league. Hup Holland Hup!
