Heracles went into the game without a win since November and short of confidence. Fortuna started the game brightly and hit the woodwork through a Mark Diemers free-kick.
After half-an-hour the game turned in the home side’s favour when George Cox pulled Silvester van der Water to the ground. He was shown a red card and Cyriel Dessers put Heracles in front from the penalty spot.
Heracles were comfortable but in the 62nd minute, Jeff Hardeveld handled in the box and Fortuna got a penalty. Diemers had the perfect chance to equalise but his spot-kick was saved by Janis Blaswich.
Eight minutes after the miss, Dessers doubled Heracles lead after a quick free-kick. It was the 14th goal of the season for the striker, who now goes above Myron Boadu as the Eredivisie top scorer.
Heracles are level with Groningen in eighth after the win while Fortuna sits 13th.
