After a difficult start to the campaign and a 7-0 hammering at home to rivals Feyenoord, Alex Pastoor was sacked by the Sparta management last week.

Ever since then, Dick Advocaat, who spent time with Sparta as a player, has been linked with taking over. On Christmas Day, Sparta confirmed that Advocaat has signed a deal to take charge of the club until the end of the season.

Advocaat, who stepped down as Netherlands head coach in November, has six months to guide the club away from the relegation zone. They currently sit 17th, level on points with bottom of the table Roda JC.
