Former Netherlands striker Dick Nanninga passed away on Tuesday at the age of 66.

nanninThe attacker had spells with Veendam, Seiko and MVV during his lengthy career, but will be mostly remember for his time at Roda JC where he netted 107 league goals in 225 games. He is still their all time leading scorer.

Nanninga played 15 times for Netherlands national team, and scored during the 1978 World Cup final against Argentina. His header leveled the scores at 1-1 and sent the game into extra time, but Argentina went on to win. It was an eventful tournament for the striker, who was sent off in an earlier game against West Germany.

The cause of death has not been announced, but Nanninga had several health problems since retiring. He spent five months in a coma in 2012, while due to diabetes he was forced to have his leg amputated.

We at Football-Oranje send our condolences to Dick Nanninga’s friends and family.
