A 93rd minute winner condemned PSV Eindhoven to their first defeat in the Europa League group stages as they were beaten 1-0 by Dinamo Moscow in Russia.

wijdinpsvWith both teams winning their opening match, a win for either side would put them within touching distance of reaching the next round, and both sides created chances early on. After only five minutes Christopher Samba’s downward header seemed to be heading inside the post, but Jeroen Zoet showed great reflexes to paw the ball away. Three minutes later Georginio Wijnaldum sent a powerful shot towards goal after racing onto Santiago Arias’s pass but Dinamo keeper Vladimir Gabulov pulled off a great stop.

Dinamo dominated the first half, but PSV created the best chances in the second half, and they squandered three good chances to take the lead. Wijnaldum shot just wide of goal, while Adam Maher also came close with a long range effort, but it was Florian Jozefzoon who will be kicking himself after the match. The winger was played through on goal, but after rounding Gabulov a poor touch took him wide and he could only fire into the side netting, with an unmarked Jurgen Locadia furious at not receiving the pass for a simple tap in.

The game was heading for a 0-0 draw but in the 93nd minute Zoet could only parry a Samba header into the path of Yuri Zhirkov, who struck a nice volley into the net to give the Russian’s all three points. Its another disappointing defeat for PSV, who also fell to Heerenveen at the weekend after failing to take their chances, and its clear the Eindhoven side are missing the clinical duo of Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong.

In the other group game Panathinaikos were defeated for the 2nd time in the group as they lost 2-0 to Portuguese side Estoril. Phillip Cocu’s side host Panathinaikos in the next round of matches and will look for the win to get their campaign back on track.
