Jaap Stam handed Rick Karsdorp a start after his return from AS Roma, while Wouter Burger and Orkun Kokcu continued in midfielder due to the absence of Leroy Fer and Jens Toornstra. Heerenveen handed a first start to winger Chidera Ejuke.
Heerenveen began the game on top with Ejuke having a shot blocked from a promising position. In the 12th minute, Rodney Kongolo was brought down by Eric Botteghin in the box but Jens Odgaard’s spot-kick was kept out by Kenneth Vermeer.
Feyenoord improved after that scare but struggled to create clear opportunities. Warner Hahn denied Kokcu, who should have done better in a great position.
On the stroke of half-time, Feyenoord took the lead through a Steven Berghuis penalty after Sherel Floranus was punished for a handball.
Stam made changes early in the second half with Yassin Ayoub and Luciano Narsingh entering the field. However, Feyenoord failed to kill the game and Heerenveen got chances for the equaliser.
Ejuke had an effort cleared off the line by Berghuis before Ibrahim Dresevic made it 1-1 with an excellent strike from distance into the top corner.
Neither side could find a winning goal and the points were shared. Heerenveen now sit on four points, while Feyenoord are on two.
