The Netherlands got off to a fast start but a red card for Denzel Dumfries led to a 1-1 draw with Ecuador.

After the win over Norway, Ronald Koeman decided to make some changes with Mark Flekken, Stefan de Vrij, Nathan Ake, Jerdy Schouten, Quinten Timber, Xavi Simons and Brian Brobbey all starting.

Netherlands got off to a good start and they had the lead early on thanks to an own goal from Willian Pacho.

However, it all went wrong in the 12th minute when a long ball forward evaded De Vrij and Denzel Dumfries made a last-man challenge which resulted in a red card.

Ecuador where then awarded a penalty in the 24th minute for a foul by Flekken and Enner Valencia made it 1-1 from the spot.

Netherlands then went into defensive mode as they looked to keep Ecuador out. Looking for pace, Koeman brought on Jeremie Frimpong at the break but he lasted less than 15 minutes before going off injured.

Ecuador had the better of the chances but Netherlands should have led when Brobbey got in on goal but he could not finish.

Netherlands managed to see the game out and took a draw. A frustrating evening for Koeman, who would not have learned what he wanted from the evening. However, a strong defensive display with ten men to prevent defeat.

Elsewhere, Sweden defeated Poland 3-2 and they will be in the Netherlands World Cup group. Japan defeated England 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley.
