eerste 2Sparta Rotterdam are the latest team to suffer the curse of top spot in Eerste Divisie, like Helmond Sport & MVV Maastricht before them Sparta topped the table following a great run but a run of only win in five has seen them stutter. Their latest defeat came in a five goal thriller at Go Ahead Eagles but Sparta remain in top spot after MVV drew 2-2 with fellow high flyers De Graafschap.

Like MVV, Volendam & Helmond Sport have 48 points & sit one point behind the leaders, Volendam were also involved in a five goal thriller on Friday as they beat Fortuna Sittard 3-2 with another goal for Jack Tuyp who will take some replacing at the Kras Stadion in the Summer. Helmond also won the weekend beating local rivals & rock bottom Eindhoven 2-1, the visitors have now lost seven in a row & are 17 without a win.

Eindhoven are now six points adrift as Excelsior picked up another point in a 1-1 draw with Den Bosch who made it ten games unbeaten. Although Excelsior have a six point gap on Eindhoven they are also six points behind the team directly above them after Almere recorded a 2-1 success over Cambuur lifting them towards mid table, Telstar replace them in 14th place after they could only pick up a point in a 1-1 draw with Emmen who remain one point above in 13th.

Easter Monday brings another (almost) full set of fixtures, Veendam’s home game with Dordrecht has been postponed due to the uncertainty of their future, although the mammoth effort being put in by the people of Veendam brings renewed hope for the club.

Sparta Rotterdam will be aiming to put their recent inconsistent form behind them as they welcome Emmen, Volendam visit bottom of the league Eindhoven & MVV Maastricht are also on the road as they travel to third bottom Emmen. Helmond Sport have the toughest game of the top four teams as they make the short journey to Den Bosch & hope to become the first team in eleven to take maximum points.
