Venlo needed to better Willem II’s result in Maastricht as well as boosting their own goal difference in the process. VVV stuck to their part of the bargain & were 3-0 up inside 30 minutes at home to Twente Jong, no further were added or needed as MVV Maastricht who have shown signs of recent improvement held Willem II to a 2-2 draw as celebrations got underway at the Stadion de Koel. Two other sides need the slip ups that didn’t happen to win the period three title but Den Bosch & Excelsior both did their bit by winning their games but to no avail, Excelsior crushed high flying Eindhoven 5-2 with Lars Veldwijk hitting a hat trick taking his season’s tally to 20. Veldwijk is certain to be targeted in the summer & the striker released recently by Utrecht could well come back to haunt his former side. Den Bosch beat an out of sorts Sparta Rotterdam side but will look back to two recent losses that have cost them in the race for the period title. Sparta look a side in turmoil at the moment & have lost four out of the five games under new Coach Gert Kruys.
With all eyes on the race for the period title leaders Dordrecht failed to extend their lead at the top of the table as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ajax Jong & crazy happenings in Doetinchem as a fiery 29 days in charge of De Graafschap is over after he was sacked before the game with Volendam, his former side responded with a hard fought 2-2 draw against an in form Volendam side for whom Rob Muhren was on target again with his 19th of the season. If goals is what you want then a trip to see Emmen is a must, in their last six games four of them has seen one of the sides score four goals & one has seen them concede six, bizarrely the other ended 0-0! This weekend they struck four times in a 4-1 win at Almere City whilst Telstar & PSV Jong were locked at 2-2.
Achilles 29 & Oss seem to exchange the bottom two places on a weekly basis & this week was no exception as Achilles 29 drew 0-0 with Fortuna Sittard & they move off the bottom after Oss were beaten 3-1 at Helmond Sport, the only positive for Oss was the ninth goal of the season for on loan striker Guyon Phillips.
