The big game of the weekend did not disappoint especially if you are a fan of Tilburg based Willem II who closed the gap on leaders Dordrecht to one point after a scintillating performance in 3-1 home win. A double from Ruud Boymans, taking his tally to 24 for the season & one from Bruno Andrade gave Willem II the points, Paul Gladon scored a late consolation for the visitors. Willem II can top the table if they win their game in hand at De Graafschap on Wednesday & as the season draws to a close it is going to go down to the wire. One side who did disappoint at the weekend were Telstar, there is nothing wrong in a home defeat to Excelsior as the Rotterdam side have been in good form of late but the manor & scoreline will hurt the Telstar faithful as Excelsior matched the 8-0 win that Oss celebrated a few weeks back. Lars Veldwijk helped himself to a hat trick & he now leads the Eerste Divisie scorers chart with 25.
VVV Venlo had lost four of their six games since becoming Period Three Champions but they stay third after a 2-1 win over Emmen, Den Bosch move up to fifth after a fine 4-1 win over PSV Jong on Monday night, Den Bosch have now won four in a row & are a point above Eindhoven who also enjoyed a Monday night victory winning 2-1 at Ajax Jong. De Graafschap had won four of their last five but suffered a 2-1 loss at Twente Jong who celebrated Jan Zoutman’s decision to stay on as Coach with a much needed win.
The bottom two both suffered 3-0 losses, Achilles 29 went down at MVV Maastricht whilst Oss were beaten at home to Almere City who recorded a fourth straight win & they move above Telstar to fourth bottom. Sparta Rotterdam slipped to yet another defeat their seventh in the last nine games as Fortuna Sittard who by the odd goal in five, Fortuna are in ninth place & are eyeing a strong finish to the season & a possible play off campaign. Helmond Sport are now seven without a win after former Coach Hans de Koning brought his Volendam side to town & left with a 1-0 win moving them into eighth place.
