Willem II, who confirmed the title on Easter Monday with a victory over Telstar won 2-1 at Almere City on the final day of the season to win the Eerste Divisie by six points from a Dordrecht side who led the table all season apart from the last few weeks. Dordrecht warmed up for a play off campaign with a 0-0 draw with another play off rival in the shape of Sparta Rotterdam. Sparta go into Monday’s first leg play off with FC Eindhoven having lost twelve of the sixteen games with under pressure Coach Gert Kruys in charge, it has been thirteen games since the Rotterdam side tasted victory & tensions are running high at the Castle.
With the title already sorted & Achilles 29 rooted at the bottom all eyes were on the three remaining play off places & the four sides competing for them. Fortuna Sittard were the side who began the day in the unwanted fourth chasing spot & they went into half time a goal down at Emmen but Ramon Voorn levelled two minutes into the second half & Fortuna held on for a point which they knew would be enough. Volendam had a torrid evening in Venlo, early in second half they were 3-0 down & knew they were heading out of the play off race especially when Oguzhan Turk added a fourth. De Graafschap & were leading Ajax Jong 2-0 & Eindhoven knew that as long as Volendam lost they were in the play offs, Eindhoven went on to win 2-1 at bottom side Achilles 29 so the play off picture was complete.
Elsewhere Telstar ended a torrid run with a victory over Twente Jong, Excelsior who were already in the play offs beat second bottom Oss 2-0 with a brace for Lars Veldwijk taking his tally to 30 for the season, MVV were held by PSV Jong & Den Bosch rounded off a successful season with a 2-1 win at Helmond Sport, former Helmond striker Eric Quekel on target with his 19th of the season & he will hope to break the 20 goal mark during the play offs.
The first two play off games are played on Monday as Sparta Rotterdam welcome Eindhoven & Fortuna Sittard meet Den Bosch & it we will have to wait until the Eredivisie season finishes before we know the two sides who will join the play offs.
