Anwar El Ghazi scored as Aston Villa defeated Derby County 2-1 in the promotion playoff final which seals their place in the Premier League next season.

The richest game in football was played between two clubs that have been waiting to return to the top level in England. Aston Villa were last active in the Premier League back in 2016, while Derby County have been waiting since 2008.

Anwar El Ghazi was lively for Aston Villa from the start and eventually he opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a backpost diving finish off his back.

While one Dutch national had an excellent game, for Derby County, Kelle Roos a nightmare in goal. Just before the hour mark, the goalkeeper failed to claim a cross and John McGinn headed Aston Villa 2-0 ahead.

Derby pulled one back late on but Aston Villa held on to claim their Premier League place.

El Ghazi was a hero on the day but he is only on loan from French side Lille and his future is undecided. He celebrated wearing a Nouri 34 t-shirt in tribute to his friend and former Ajax teammate Abdelhak Nouri.
