Mounir El Hamdaoui struck in extra-time to earn relegation-threatened Excelsior a 1-1 draw against Willem II.

Willem II went into the game in great form and 16 minutes they had the lead in Rotterdam. Renato Tapia curled an excellent strike into the net via the outside of the post.

Alexander Isak got a great chance to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards but he was denied by Excelsior goalkeeper Alessandro Damen. At the other end, Willem II goalkeeper Michael Woud saved Ali Messaoud’s attempt.

Excelsior improved after the break and Mounir El Hamdaoui had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for offside.

Willem II thought they had a penalty when referee Allard Lindhout pointed to the spot for a handball but that decision was reversed after consulting VAR.

The visitors thought they were going to see out the victory but in the 93rd minute the ball fell perfectly for El Hamdaoui in the box and he slotted in an equaliser.

The point means Excelsior are now 16th but they are still five points from safety. Willem II remains in eighth.
