Groningen have moved themselves away from the drop zone with a 2-1 victory over Vitesse Arnhem.

Groningen welcomed back Ritsu Doan to the starting line-up after the midfielder returned from the Asia Cup.

The home side started brightly and in the 13th minute, Kaj Sierhuis fired Groningen in front.

Vitesse, who were without the suspended Bryan Linssen, went close through Matus Bero before the equaliser eventually came in the 34th minute. Vyacheslav Karavaev crossed for Oussama Darfalou to net.

The second half was a drab affair and the game seemed to be heading for a 1-1 draw. However, in the 91st minute, Mo El Hankouri weaved into the box before firing low into the bottom corner to earn Groningen a crucial win.

Groningen are now up to 12th in the table, while Vitesse stay 5th.
