Emmen took a big step towards safety with a 2-0 victory over Utrecht.

Utrecht went into the game looking to return to winning ways after their 5-0 loss to ADO and 0-0 draw at home to Vitesse. However, Emmen are fighting for their lives at the bottom and from the start the home side looked hungrier than their opponents.

After 30 minutes, Emmen took the lead when a corner eventually found Michael de Leeuw at the back post and he nodded in. Before the break it was 2-0 thanks to an excellent strike from Keziah Veendorp, who found the top corner from just outside the box.

At the break, Dick Advocaat made a double change with Gyrano Kerk and Leon Guwara replacing Urby Emanuelson and Nicolas Gavory. Kerk almost made an instant impact but he couldn’t beat Kjell Scherpen despite two attempts in front of goal.

After that Scherpen was comfortable as Emmen saw out a victory which moves them six points clear of the bottom three. Utrecht are still sixth.
