In a basement battle on Friday night, Emmen came away from NAC Breda with a 1-1 draw.

With only five games left going into the clash, NAC Breda needed a victory to realistically keep their chances of avoiding the bottom three alive.

However, it was Emmen, who are just one place above the bottom three, who began the game brightly and took the lead after 15 minutes. Luciano Slagveer was put through on goal and he slotted past Benjamin van Leer.

Caner Cavlan almost made it 2-0 but his effort came back off the crossbar. NAC’s first big chance came before the break when Giovanni Korte’s header hit the bar.

Emmen dominated the early stages of the second half but van Leer prevented the visitors from running away with the game.

NAC boss Ruud Brood threw on Gervane Kastaneer and went on the offensive but Kjell Scherpen tipped an Ilic effort over the bar with ten minutes to go and it appeared Emmen would hold on for the win.

However, in the 88th minute, Scherpen misjudged an Ilic strike and Eric Palmer-Brown hammered in an equaliser for NAC. The hosts went looking for a winner in six minutes off added time but in the end, settled for a draw.

The point doesn’t help NAC much as they remain four points adrift at the bottom of the table and seven from safety. Emmen are three points ahead of De Graafschap and Excelsior but have an inferior goal difference.
