A late equaliser saw Emmen deservedly earn a 1-1 draw at Heerenveen and prevent the Frisians from moving into the top five.

The hosts went into the game confident of a victory but it was Emmen who were the most dangerous side in the opening half-hour, especially on the counter. Caner Cavlan went close while Kik Pierie had to make a last ditch challenge to prevent the visitors.

However, it was Heerenveen who took the lead in the 30th minute when Arber Zeneli surprised young goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen by shooting from a 35-yard free-kick.

Heerenveen still hasn’t registered a win in Friesland so far this season and a number of opportunities went begging for the hosts after the break. Emmen sensed blood and in the 88th minute, an equaliser came when Reuven Niemeijer headed in a corner.

With the last chance of the game, Heerenveen got a big opportunity when Mitchell van Bergen squared the ball across goal but Pierie took the ball away from a stooping Sam Lammers who was sure to score.

The point sees Heerenveen remain ninth, while Emmen are 16th.
