PSV Eindhoven host main title challengers Ajax in a mouth-watering Eredivisie tie on Sunday. Kick-off in the Philips Stadion is 3.45pm GMT.

Both teams once again have eyes on the Eredivisie title this season and they go into Sunday’s clash level on 13 points. Only goal difference separates the two sides, who are both unbeaten in their opening five games.

PSV Eindhoven hammered Vitesse Arnhem 5-0 last weekend and followed it up with a good 3-2 victory over Sporting club de Portugal in the Europa League.

His side are in good form but Mark van Bommel still believes Ajax are favourites for the title, “I think the relationships are fairly close to each other, but Ajax is a favourite. That was true last season and it still is.

“You can see it from all the lists of predictions, but also from the fact that they have more money and can spend a lot. We have a lot of quality, but we are not there yet. ”

Ajax defeated Sparta 4-1 last Saturday and then got off to a flying start in the Champions League group stages with a 3-0 win over Lille.

Erik ten Hag’s side lost on their last trip to Amsterdam but he is happy with their development since, “Ah, Ajax has lost there more often. But how can we break that? By doing normal things and playing our own game. I am working on the development of my team, on Sunday I hope to link that to results.

“It’s a good team (PSV), the attack catches the eye. Just like with Ajax? No, I do see some differences. I think PSV has six men in the back and four good players in the front, four cowboys. “

The two sides have already met this season with Ajax running out 2-0 winners in the Johan Cruyff Schaal.

Head to Head

On the 23rd of September last season the two sides met at the Philips Stadion and PSV ran out 3-0 winners. The following March a 10-man Ajax won 3-1 in Amsterdam which helped them eventually lift the title.

In 126 Eredivisie matches between the two clubs, PSV Eindhoven have won 53 times, while Ajax have 49 victories.

Ajax still hold the overall edge with 77 victories to PSV’s 64 in their 170 meetings.

Key Players

Mohamed Ihattaren

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder was in exceptional form for PSV on Thursday in the win over Sporting.

Ihattaren’s passing ability and vision caused the Portuguese side so many issues and led to two goals. On Sunday, Van Bommel will once again start with the youngster in his side and he will look to find gaps in the Ajax defence and create the chances for Donyell Malen and Steven Bergwijn.

Hakim Ziyech

Ajax’s creative force has been in excellent form so far this season, whether playing at number ten or on the wing.

In five Eredivisie fixtures so far, Ziyech has five goals and two assists. He will once again be their key attacking player on Sunday and PSV will need to keep him quiet if they want a victory.

Donyell Malen

The striker has been in exceptional form so far for PSV and has scored six goals in his last two games.

Malen came through the Ajax academy and will now look to secure a big victory against his former side.

The 20-year-old is a bustling and quick forward, who will link well with Steven Bergwijn and Bruma in a fluid PSV attack.

Daley Blind

Ajax’s chief centre-back has been in good form this season and he will once again be key if they are to achieve a victory in Eindhoven.

Blind is calm at the back and in possession but he will be coming up against a man in form, Donyell Malen. Can the defender keep his Oranje teammate quiet on Sunday? If he can then PSV could struggle to find goals and Ajax will have a great chance to get a victory.
