Heerenveen twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Vitesse Arnhem in the first leg of their Europa League play-off.

uth vit heeVitesse began the game on top and deservedly had the lead on 21 minutes when Bertrand Traore set up Valeri Qazaishvili to tap in from close range, with referee Bas Kuipers allowing the goal to stand despite two balls being on the pitch.

Heerenveen largely played on the counter attack, and after an excellent move involving Sam Larsson and Mark Uth, Luciano Slagveer tapped in the Frisian sides equaliser just after the half hour mark.

After the break Vitesse continued to dominate and moments after Wallace had struck the post, Davy Propper raced towards goal before firing past Kristoffer Nordfeldt from outside the box to restore the visitors lead with 25 minutes to go.

Zakaria Labyad missed a great chance to wrap up the win, and Mark Uth made them pay soon afterwards, racing onto Joey van den Berg’s through ball before lifting the ball over Room.

The second leg takes place in Arnhem on Sunday, as both sides go looking for the last Europa League place.
