A meeting was held on Monday with the Eredivisie clubs voting in favour of introducing VAR from next season.
KNVB director Eric Gudde said in a statement, ‘The game is getting much fairer. Figures from the University of Leuven also support this. Many countries have already started and we also like to see the referees being supported where necessary. That is why we are going to introduce this in imitation of other countries as well. ”
FIFA have already announced that VAR will be used at the World Cup this summer while the Bundesliga, Seria A and six other leagues are already using the technology. So far in the Netherlands it has only been used in cup competitions but from next season all Eredivisie games will feature VAR.
The KNVB will front the cost for the first few years with central video centre to be set up in Zeist. From the third year, all Eredivisie clubs will share the bill of around €55 thousand each a season.
