Without a win in their last three matches, ADO Den Haag began the game energetically, but it was Excelsior who took the lead on 13 minutes when Luigi Bruins sent a fierce shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
The goal shocked the home crowd, and Excelsior took control, but Ninos Gouriye and Jeff Stans missed good opportunities before the lead was eventually doubled on 34 minutes. A corner was headed back to the edge of the box and Gouriye sent a low shot past Martin Hansen.
However a minute later Mike van Duinen was found at the back post, and the forward smashed into the top corner to bring ADO Den Haag back into the match. Five minutes before the break ADO were level as Michiel Kramer chipped the ball over the Excelsior defence for Gianni Zuiverloon to chest down and volley over Coutinho.
Despite the goal filled first half neither side could find a winning goal in the second forty-five, with Excelsior midfielder Adil Auassar firing wide when well placed, and ADO Den Haag top scorer Michiel Kramer seeing an effort saved by Coutinho.
Excelsior climb to 13th with the point, while ADO Den Haag remain 16th.
