Ajax have gained plenty of criticism for their performances lately, and were lucky to earn their first win in four matches against Go Ahead Eagles last weekend. Despite the laboured display last week, coach Frank de Boer stuck with Lasse Schone as his striker, leaving Arkaduisz Milik on the bench.
The Eredivisie champions once again looked unconvincing from the start against Twente, and were behind on six minutes as Jesus Corona rose above Kenny Tete to head in Hakim Ziyech’s cross.
However the home side rallied after the goal and they drew level on 11 minutes when Ricardo Kishna’s ball into the box was emphatically smashed past Sonny Stevens by Nick Viergever. Four minutes later Ajax were ahead through Riechedly Bazoer, who chested down Daley Sinkgraven’s ball before volleying into the top corner. The youngsters first in the Eredivisie.
Twente attacked Ajax looking for an equaliser and after Jasper Cillessen denied Luc Castaignos, Hakim Ziyech fired in the rebound to draw his side level. The away side looked the more likely to net again, but winger Ricardo Kishna inspired Ajax to victory, firstly side footing Anwar El Ghazi’s cross into the top corner, before racing onto Arkaduisz Milik’s flick to seal the win from close range on 75 minutes. Kishna’s second was Ajax’s 5000th goal in the Eredivisie.
With the victory Ajax stay 12 points behind leaders PSV and go into the Europa League tie against Legia Warsaw next week with confidence. Twente’s third loss in a row leaves them outside the European play-off places in eighth.
