Excelsior’s performances over the past few weeks have been impressive, but they were second best from the beginning against Willem II and fell behind on 19 minutes when Robbie Haemhouts fired a long range effort into the bottom corner.
Willem II continued to dominate after the goal and it was a surprise when Excelsior equalised after 56 minutes as Tom van Weert slid in Luigi Bruin’s cross from close range. However the home side weren’t level for long before Ali Messaoud raced through a static defence before rounding Coutinho and finishing calmly into an empty net.
In injury time Charlton Vicento sent Ben Sahar through with a lovely pass and the forward made it 3-1, before Jeff Stans pulled one back from close range, but that proved to be nothing but a consolation as Willem II held on.
The win lifts Willem II above Groningen into tenth, while Excelsior sit 13th.
