Feyenoord avoided their first defeat since September in the league as they came back from 2-0 down to earn a draw against AZ Alkmaar.

clasie feyazThe home side went into the game on the back of the Europa League triumph over Standard Liege on Thursday, but there were signs of a European hangover as AZ took the lead on 25 minutes. When Nemanja Gudelj’s corner was headed back towards goal the Feyenoord defence was nowhere to be seen and Wesley Hoedt had a simple header from close range.

Four minutes later AZ took advantage of more slack defending from the home side to double their lead with Maumer Tankovic sliding the ball in from close range.

Jens Toornstra hit the post before the break as Feyenoord looked for a way back, and eight minutes into the second half Colin Kazim Richards fired a low shot past Esteban from a tight angle.

Feyenoord pushed for the equaliser, but it seemed AZ were going to hold on for the three points, until in the 94th minute Jordy Clasie smashed an uncleared corner past Esteban to earn his side a point.

Feyenoord slip to fourth in the table, and are now nine points behind leaders PSV, who they face in Eindhoven on Wednesday, while AZ are one place behind on goal difference.
