FC Twente came to Rotterdam with the idea of frustrating the home side as they started in a 5-3-2 formation, and for the first half hour the tactics worked. Feyenoord failed to create any clear chances and it was the away side who had the first opportunity as Jesus Corona was found in the box by Robert Schilder, but the Mexican’s header was brilliantly saved by Kenneth Vermeer.
On 36 minutes Feyenoord were awarded a penalty for a rash challenge by Rasmus Bengtsson on Karim El Ahmadi, but Colin Kazim-Richards spot kick was saved by Sonny Stevens. From the resulting corner Lex Immers brilliantly hooked the ball into the top corner to give the home side the lead.
Twente were level five minutes into the second half through Orlando Engelaar who pounced when Kenneth Vermeer failed to hold onto Luc Castaignos cross and prodded in from close range. Corona nearly gave Twente the lead minutes later, but another free header for the winger flew wide.
On the hour mark El Ahmadi’s blocked shot fortunately fell into the path of Jens Toornsta and the midfielders shot into the ground bounced over Stevens to restore Feyenoord’s lead. The three points were then secured a minute later as Jean Paul Boetius slid Kazim Richards perfect cross over the line from close range.
Ziyech tested Vermeer with a long range effort, while Feyenoord also came close to adding further goals with Immers striking the post late on.
Feyenoord leap back to third while Twente drop to sixth.
