Twente have had a terrible week on the pitch with last weeks 5-0 loss to PSV followed up with a penalty defeat to PEC Zwolle in the KNVB Cup semi-finals. Off the pitch things are even worse for the Enschede side with the KNVB inflicting another three point penalty for money issues while sponsor XXimo announced they will cancel their deal at the end of the season.
Early on against Go Ahead Eagles it seemed Twente were on course for another defeat as the home side took the lead on 23 minutes when Wesley Verhoek capitalised on a terrible error by Andreas Bjelland before chipping over a stranded Nick Marsman and into the net.
However in Hakim Ziyech Twente have a player of huge quality, and the midfielder took his side by the scruff of the neck. Firstly Ziyech leveled the scores from the penalty spot after a handball by Sven Nieuwpoort, before sending an excellent ball to Renato Tapia in the box, and the Peruvian struck perfectly into the bottom corner to send Twente into the break ahead.
Ziyech then provided another assist five minutes into the second half as his corner was headed in from close range by Tapia for his second. The midfielder was forced off the pitch injured, but Go Ahead Eagles could find no way back into the match, and Twente comfortably held on for the win.
Twente sit eleventh in the table, and are unlikely to trouble the European play-off spots with four games left, while Go Ahead remain five points from safety.
