Last week in De Kuip two goals from Albert Rusnak handed Groningen their first ever KNVB Cup trophy, and booked their place in the Europa League, at the expense of PEC Zwolle, who will now have to fight it out in the play-offs.
PEC Zwolle started the game on top, with Bart van Hintum coming close from a free kick, while Maikel van der Werff failed to convert a great chance from a corner. Groningen looked to play on the counter attack, but through Rusnak and Tjaronn Chery they failed to really test Warner Hahn.
In the second half it was substitute Tomas Necid who settled the tie, finishing nicely on the turn, for his first league goal since returning to PEC Zwolle in January. The away side had to play the final minutes of the match with ten men when Thomas Lam saw red, but PEC Zwolle held out for the win.
The win saw PEC Zwolle climb above Heerenveen into sixth, while Groningen remain 8th.
