Vitesse’s wait for a victory goes on after they were held to a 1-1 draw in Groningen on Sunday.

grovit ereThe Arnhem side last tasted victory back in October (seven games ago), and they looked on course to take victory when Bertrand Traore gave them the lead, but Tjarron Chery rescued a point for the hosts.

Groningen began the game in control, and Mimoum Mahi should have given them the lead but the forward, who seized on an error from Jan-Arie van der Heijden, couldn’t beat Eloy Room when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The home side continued to dominate possession but it was Vitesse who took the lead before the break when Bertrand Traore slipped a challenge before finding the bottom corner with a low shot from the edge of the box.

Vitesse missed a number of chances to kill the game in the second half and Groningen punished them on 61 minutes as Chery slotted in after Room couldn’t hold onto a Mahi shot.

Groningen came close to finding the winning goal late on when Michael de Leeuw’s header was cleared off the line, but both teams had to settle for a point. Groningen now sit eighth while Vitesse are 12th.
