Groningen had slid down the table recently after four matches without a win, but they took the lead against Utrecht as Tjarron Chery curled a free kick into the bottom corner after half an hour. However a minute later a corner landed at Edouard Duplan’s feet and the winger fired Utrecht level.
Five minutes into the second half Michael de Leeuw scored a trademark header from Hans Hataboer’s cross to restore Groningen’s lead, but once again it was short lived as Utrecht equalised three minutes later. Yassine Ayoub jinked past a challenge on the edge of the box before rifling a shot into the bottom corner.
Utrecht were unlucky not to come away with all three points as Nacer Barazite and Rubio Rubin missing good chances, while Ayoub could only hit the crossbar in front of an open goal.
Groningen remain unbeaten at the Euroborg and sit 9th while Utrecht are two places behind in 11th.
