With Go Ahead Eagles losing to AZ Alkmaar, Heracles knew a win would put them level on points with the Deventer side in 15th place, but they barely threatened in the opening half hour. The home side fashioned their first chance just before the break but Brahim Darri was denied by Robbin Ruiter.
On 75 minutes Heracles took the lead as Simon Cziommer sent in a wonderful cross which was headed past Ruiter by Denni Avdic. However the lead only lasted four minutes before Sebastian Haller, who netted four last week in the win over Dordrecht, teased his marker before firing past a stranded Castro.
Jeroen Veldmate was sent off for the hosts after his second yellow card, but Utrecht could not find a winner, and Heracles held on for a crucial point. Utrecht sit 12th, while Heracles are now two points off Go Ahead and safety.
