Feyenoord’s defeat to Heracles on Saturday gave PEC Zwolle the chance to claim third spot, and make amends for last weeks 4-0 hammering against Heerenveen.
However the home side started poorly and it wasn’t a shock when Jeffrey Rijsdijk hammered Deniz Turuc’s cross past Warner Hahn on 25 minutes to give Go Ahead Eagles the lead.
PEC Zwolle had a lot of possession but failed to turn that into chances which frustrated coach Ron Jans, who was sent to the stands after a comment to the referee. Jans frustration grew in the second half when Stef Nijland was shown a red card after an incident with Go Ahead Eagles defender Jop van der Linden.
Despite being reduced to ten men PEC Zwolle had chances to level, with Eli Babalj coming close before Mustafa Saymak struck the crossbar. Go Ahead held on for the victory which keeps them in fifteen place, while PEC Zwolle are fifth.
