A last minute strike from Kolbeinn Sigthorsson rescued Ajax a 1-1 draw against PEC Zwolle which confirms second place for the Amsterdam side.

pecajaPEC Zwolle have becomeĀ a real bogey team for Ajax over the past year, with Ron Jans side heading into the game on Sunday unbeaten in their last four matches against Frank de Boer’s boys.

The home side once again looked the better of the two teams on the pitch in the first half, with Jasper Cillessen making a good save from Sheraldo Becker, while Mustafa Saymak was denied by a Nick Viergever block. However Ajax should have been ahead going into the break when Anwar El Ghazi was sent through on goal by Riechedly Bazoer, but Warner Hahn pulled off an excellent stop.

Shortly after half time PEC Zwolle had the lead with Jesper Drost received a pass from Ryan Thomas before finding the bottom corner with a fantastic half volley from a tight angle.

PEC Zwolle defended well after the opening goal, but in the last minute a corner was met by Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, and although his first header was saved, the Icelandic striker smashed in the rebound to earn Ajax a point.

The draw seals Ajax’s place in the Champions League qualifiers next season, while PEC Zwolle sit 7th.
