PEC Zwolle could not turn their dominance into a win as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Excelsior.

excpecjsjsAfter four defeats in the last five games PEC Zwolle have gone from challengers for third to seventh in the table, but early on against Excelsior they looked back to their silky best with Mustafa Saymak pulling the strings in midfield.

The home side dominated possession in the opening half hour and it was no surprise when Saymak fired in the opening goal with the help of Sander Fischer’s foot. However the lead only lasted three minutes before Jeff Stans raced onto a pass from Jordan Botaka before firing an excellent strike into the top corner with the outside of his foot.

PEC Zwolle continued to dominate after the break, but Stef Njland headed a Jody Lukoki cross wide, while Tomas Necid could only send an overhead kick over the bar. To the frustration of the home crowd, PEC Zwolle couldn’t turn their dominance into a winning goal, and Excelsior held on for a point.

PEC Zwolle remain 7th with the point, while Excelsior are 13th.
