The game started at an electric pace with both sides clearly looking to go for a win and after 13 minutes it was Feyenoord who took the lead. A Jordy Clasie through ball sent Elvis Manu in on goal, and after rounding Jeroen Zoet the winger sent the ball into the net, despite the best efforts of Jeffrey Bruma who nearly prevented the goal on the line.
It should have been 2-0 soon after but Khalid Boulahrouz blasted over the bar from close range. The miss proved crucial as on 22 minutes a brilliant team move from PSV was finished emphatically by Luuk de Jong.
The rest of the half continued to be end to end with Georginio Wijnaldum hitting the post before another Clasie through ball sent Khalid El Ahmadi through on goal and the midfielder prodded past Zoet to give the Rotterdam side a half time lead.
PSV dominated after the break and De Jong headed in the equaliser on the hour mark, before the striker completed his hat-trick with another powerful header from Jetro Willems cross.
Feyenoord looked beaten but with 90 seconds of normal time left Bilal Basacikoglu’s header across goal was prodded in by Colin Kazim Richards. The visitors then had a chance to win the match late on when they won a corner in the last minute of injury time, but a poor delivery was latched on by PSV, and after a long ball found Florian Jozefzoon in the box the winger squared for Depay to tap into an empty net and give the home side the three points.
PSV now move four points ahead of Ajax in the title race and with a tie at home against Go Ahead Eagles to come this weekend, the Eindhoven side should be in full control of the title race going into the winter break. Feyenoord now sit 12 points behind, and can afford no more mistakes if they are to get back into the race.
