Twente who were already without Andreas Bjellend, Hakim Ziyech, Jesus Corona and Luc Castaignos, decided to rest some of their other star players for their cup semi-final with PEC Zwolle on Tuesday. However Alfred Schreuder’s gamble ended with his side taking a battering from the league leaders.
The home side began the game well, and Jeroen Zoet was forced into a good save from Ryo Miyaichi, while they also had two penalty appeals turned away. However PSV were clearly the stronger team, and on 28 minutes Luuk de Jong opened the scoring on the rebound after Luciano Narsingh’s shot came back off the post.
Five minutes later it was 2-0 when Jeffrey Bruma headed in a corner, and just before the break Wijnaldum swept home a third from the edge of the box after being picked out by Narsingh’s cross.
With fifteen minutes to go Memphis Depay raced clear of the Twente defence before slotting past Sonny Stevens, while the Eredivisie top scorer smashed in his 19th goal of the season from close range to complete the scoring.
PSV move 11 points clear of Ajax, who play Utrecht tomorrow, and with only five games left for Phillip Cocu’s side, the title is close. Twente now sit 9th, and the KNVB Cup is the only route into Europe for the Enschede side.
