Six games without a win and the deduction of three points for money troubles have all but ended Twente’s chances of a top seven finish, and the European play-offs. However Twente started the game against PEC Zwolle in determined fashion with goalkeeper Warner Hahn having to make smart stops to deny both Hakim Ziyech and Luc Castaignos.
The home side were forced into two changes before the break with Andreas Bjelland and Luc Castiagnos suffering injuries, but Twente continued to press and should have been ahead at half time, but Hahn made a great diving save to stop Ziyech’s goal-bound header.
Hahn continued to deny Twente in the second half, with the keeper preventing both Corona and Kyle Ebecilio from giving their side a deserved lead. However Hahn was finally beaten on 78 minutes when Renato Tapia headed in a corner.
Four minutes later it was 2-0 as a swift counter attack saw Youness Mokhtar through on goal, and despite Hahn stopping the winger’s shot, Ziyech fired in the rebound. PEC Zwolle introduced Stef Nijland, who netted a hat-trick last week, but he could not spark a comeback.
The much needed win puts Twente into eighth place, but they sit five points behind Heerenveen in seventh. PEC Zwolle remain 6th.
