Vitesse Arnhem missed the chance to close in on the top three after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Groningen on Saturday evening.

tragronf fGroningen face Excelsior midweek in the KNVB Cup semi-finals, but suggestions that Edwin van de Looi would rest a number of key players for the Vitesse match were dismissed, and the away side had the lead after 13 minutes. A short corner was fired into the box and Rasmus Lindgren ghosted to the front post to knock past Eloy Room from close range.

Vitesse dominated the rest of the first half, but failed to find an equaliser, although both Davy Propper and Betrand Traore came close, the latter being denied with a good save by Sergio Padt. The Groningen goalkeeper once again denied Traore just after the break, while substitute Uros Djordjevic also passed up a great chance to equalise.

Finally with ten minutes to go Vitesse were level but the goal was very fortunate, as Zakaria Labyad’s shot hit the post before deflecting off Padt and ending in the net. Despite a late flurry of action, neither side could find the winning goal, and both settled for a point.

Fifth placed Vitesse are now six points behind Feyenoord in third, while Groningen lie 11th.
