Feyenoord’s chances of finishing second took a killer blow on Sunday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Willem II in Tilburg.

will fey djdjdjOn the week that Feyenoord confirmed the signing of Dirk Kuyt, the Rotterdam club showed why offensive purchases will be vital this summer as they struggled to create anything of note in a poor first half hour.

The first real chance of the game fell for Willem II when Terrel Ondaan was played through on goal, and when the onrushing Kenneth Vermeer failed to clear, Sven van Beek had to make a crucial block to deny the winger a simple finish into the empty net.

Moments later Feyenoord had the lead out of nothing when Elvis Manu sent a volley into the bottom corner from the edge of the area, but ten minutes before the break a corner was bundled into the net by Freek Heerkens backside to level the scores.

The home side had the better of the second half and deservedly took the lead on 74 minutes when Terence Kongolo’s slip in the box allowed substitute Bruno Andrade the space to finish past Vermeer. However Willem II were not to record the double over Feyenoord as Colin Kazim Richards, who had been poor all game, showed quality in the box to trap Jean Paul Boetius cross before firing into the top corner on the turn.

Feyenoord nearly nicked the win with the last kick of the game, but Jens Toornstra’s spectacular strike from distance flew inches wide. The draw all but ends Feyenoord’s chances of finishing 2nd as they sit eight points behind Ajax, while Willem II climb temporarily to 8th, which could be good enough for a European play-off place.
