PSV Eindhoven’s search for their third consecutive Eredivisie title hasn’t gone to plan so far this season with a number of their key players performing far below the level they have shown over the past two years. Luuk de Jong has took most of the criticism but left-back Jetro Willems has also been a shadow of the player that was linked to some of Europe’s biggest clubs after playing a pivotal role in the title-winning 2014/15 campaign.

Last season was disturbed by injury, but the 22-year-olds head was on a transfer in the summer and with one not materialising he has clearly struggled with motivation so far this campaign.

However, on Saturday Willems was back to his best as PSV convincingly saw off AZ Alkmaar in what could have been a tricky away tie.The left-back drove at the AZ defence early in the game and scored two excellent goals by the time the clock had even hit the sixteen-minute mark.

After netting his first two goals of the season, Willems was also imperious at the back, making two tackles, two interceptions and two clearances which helped his club win 4-2 and maintain their faint title hopes. It appears that Willems has refound his mojo which is great news for PSV and the Dutch national team. If Willems can maintain this form until the end of the season then his name will once again be linked with big clubs around Europe.
