Saturday, 30th January

Heracles Almelo v FC Groningen

Groningen are on the cusp of the top five, so winning games like this one will be important to break into the title-chasing pack. Heracles won the reverse fixture right before Christmas. Ahmed Kutucu should get his first start for the home side, supported by the ever-improving Delano Burgzorg and Sylvester van der Water. I think this’ll be quite an entertaining game. 2-2 | Tip: Over 2.5 goals.

FC Utrecht v PEC Zwolle

Two sides at either ends of the mid-table pack. Utrecht come into this three wins on the spin, which is finally making a difference to their season; this has to be four. 2-0 | Tip: Home win.

Fortuna Sittard v VVV-Venlo

Fortuna Sittard are another team in strong form. They surprised me to pick up yet another win against RKC in mid-week. With VVV beating Vitesse 4-1 on Wednesday, did you know they’ve now won five of their last six games (in all comps)? So we now have quite the match on our hands! It would be extraordinary if Georgios Giakoumakis scores again. 3-2 | Tip: Over 2.5 goals.

Vitesse Arnhem v RKC Waalwijk – Delayed airing on Premier Sports 1

I correctly predicted Vitesse to lose to VVV, but I do now anticipate Vitesse to put that right with victory over RKC. 3-0 | Tip: Vitesse -1.5 Asian handicap.

Sunday, 31st January

FC Twente v Heerenveen

Twente made few mistakes defensively in their last fixture, but they also lacked a punch up front. Luciano Narsingh, who is on loan from Feyenoord, made a drab debut as he looks to replace the injured Vaclav Cerny, who was Twente’s most creative spark. Have the Heerenveen from the start of the season now returned following their win over Feyenoord? If so, they are in for another win here, because I thought they played very well. 0-2 | Tip: Heerenveen away win.

Willem II v FC Emmen

It’s win or bust seemingly for both of these sides. Willem II hired new manager Zeljko Petrovic ahead of this weekend, whilst Emmen played a good game against PSV, of course without the desired result. Willem II are the better of these two sides and should really be pulling away from the bottom three; I still think they’re going to turn it round – they have too much quality! 3-1 | Tip: Over 2.5 goals.

Feyenoord v PSV – Delayed airing on Premier Sports 2

One of two huge matches at the top of the Eredivisie sees Feyenoord (whose season is on the verge of collapse) face PSV (who, like Ajax, continue to win when playing poorly). I watched both of these sides play in mid-week, and I don’t see anything other than a PSV win here. Feyenoord are at home (for what it’s worth nowadays), but they’ve just suffered three defeats in a row – and they haven’t performed well at all. Steven Berghuis in particular is not playing with any swagger; one goal in his last eight is a bad return. PSV have been scraping results since the new year, though they did lose to AZ a couple of weeks ago. Injuries could be PSV’s biggest enemy on Sunday: Cody Gakpo should be back, but it could be too soon for Noni Madueke and Mario Gotze. 0-1 | Tip: PSV away win.

ADO Den Haag v Sparta Rotterdam

ADO have been injected with some new signings, but they were well beaten by Groningen on Tuesday. Sparta have some players who I think will make the most of the space on the counter attack with ADO chasing a win. Abdou Harroui is the perfect type of midfielder to have in this situation because of his defence-splitting passes. 1-2 | Tip: Sparta team goals +1.5.

AZ Alkmaar v Ajax – LIVE on Premier Sports 2

Another one at the top end of the Eredivisie. AZ will be looking to quickly forget their defeat to Utrecht by making it a trio of wins in a month versus Feyenoord, PSV and Ajax. This will probably be the most difficult of the three. Ajax are the favourites for the league and they already have a nice cushion to where AZ sit in the division. I hope this is another classic Eredivisie tie, with AZ’s best young players impressing many all over the continent again. The Alkmaar side always play their best when against a top side because they have attackers who love to use the space opposition defences afford them in these kinds of games. Ajax have shown this January that they are able to pick up three points when they are far from their best. When they played Willem II, I thought they were underwhelming for potential Eredivisie champions. On Sunday, AZ could win, but they must keep it tight at the back. 2-2 | Tip: Over 2.5 goals.
