Friday

Heerenveen v Utrecht

Attacking wise, Heerenveen have some dangerous weapons. However, as displayed in Alkmaar last Sunday, their defending leaves much to be desired.

Their opponents on Friday are a side who looked good when they played PSV. Whilst Utrecht could do with a new centre-back, they look ready for another challenge of the top five.

This could be an open game. I think Utrecht will really get at Heerenveen’s backline.

Michael’s prediction: 1-3

Tip: Get over 2.5 second half goals at 5/2 here.

Saturday

Excelsior v Groningen

These two teams had differing fortunes on the opening day. Excelsior’s new look squad looked great whereas Groningen were very disappointing.

It’s difficult to back against the home side to not win again given how poor Groningen were last time out. Although I’m sure Ernest Faber will have done some hard training with his team this week. Their main issue was defending; Faber’s side were far too open.

Michael’s prediction: 2-1

Tip: Tom van Weert is 6/4 to score against his former team at any time.

Vitesse v ADO Den Haag

This’ll be an intriguing match from an ADO point of view, as last season this was the kind of match where they would defend deep in order to walk away with a point. Now with a new manager and a dominant opening day performance under their belts, ADO will be full of confidence travelling to Arnhem.

Henk Fraser plays host to his former club and I think his new side’s technical, forward players will break down ADO.

Michael’s prediction: 2-1

Ajax v Roda JC

Ajax’s technical players made the difference in the game with Sparta. Let’s hope Daley Sinkgraven carries on where he left off, he’s such a talented player but has yet to even scratch the surface of his potential.

Roda looked OK against Heracles. I don’t know if they have a performance in them to take down Ajax, but I’m sure they’ll be fine in the long run this season.

Michael’s prediction: 2-0

Tip: Adil Auassar is 8/1 to score at anytime – a midfielder now playing as a striker.

PEC Zwolle v Sparta

Ron Jans’s side played some nice stuff in Nijmegen and were unfortunate not to walk away with all three points.

Anass Achabar already looks like he’s going to fit in with PEC. He’ll be expected to burden the home side’s threat on Saturday against Sparta, who didn’t look too bad against Ajax.

It’s still tough to say whether or not Sparta have what it takes to remain in the Eredivisie this season. These kinds of games will give a better indication. I expect a tight affair as the Rotterdammers will show fight.

Michael’s prediction: 1-0

Sunday

Heracles v Willem II

It’s tough to predict the outcome of this one, as it’s difficult to tell whether Willem II will have improved over the last week, following their poor defensive display against Vitesse.

I think Heracles will have a tough job in breaking them down, as the Tilburgers will want to rectify their mistakes.

Michael’s prediction: 1-1

Feyenoord v Twente

Feyenoord were excellent in demolishing Groningen. Despite their opponents’ deficiencies, the Rotterdammers’ attacks were menacing and many players impressed. Although we’ve seen over the last 3-4 years that Feyenoord’s main issue in a title race is consistency.

Visitors Twente still need to strengthen in this transfer window as they currently look short on quality and leadership.

So for now, Feyenoord’s good start looks set to continue.

Michael’s prediction: 2-0

Tip: Feyenoord are still being offered at 10/1 here to win the Eredivisie.

Go Ahead Eagles v NEC

The poor result in The Hague will have dampened Go Ahead’s spirits. Hans de Koning needs to improve the Eagles’ attack as they don’t look ready for the Eredivisie yet.

Maybe they’ll have a better time versus NEC. The team from Nijmegen also struggled in their first game and must be training hard at the moment in order to get up to standard.

NEC looked toothless in attack and careless on the ball. That’s why I think Go Ahead have a far better chance in this one.

Michael’s prediction: 2-1

PSV v AZ

This looks to be the game of the weekend given the ambitions of both teams for this season.

That said, PSV have won this game at home in each of the last seven seasons, AZ having a player sent off in three of those last seven meetings.

I think Phillip Cocu will alter a few things for this match seeing as his side had a poor first half in Utrecht. Cocu perhaps needs another addition in midfield, now that Marco van Ginkel won’t be returning this summer.

I thought AZ looked pretty good against Heerenveen. They showed their passion to play nice football and were unlucky not to win quite comfortably.

Because of Cocu’s inevitable tinkering throughout this week, I’ll back PSV to win and play better.

Michael’s prediction: 2-0

Tip: AZ are 6/1 to claim a surprise win.
