FC Groningen and PSV Eindhoven represented the Eredivisie in Friday’s draw for the third qualifying round of the 2014-2015 UEFA Europa League.

A Potential Spanish Affair

Following last night’s 0-0 draw in Scotland between Groningen and Aberdeen, the qualifying match between the two sides remains finely balanced before the return leg takes place in the Netherlands on Thursday.

The winners of the tie will advance to the third qualifying round, where Real Sociedad of Spain await. By fortune of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid claiming the domestic league and cup, respectively, the Basque side were given a berth to the penultimate qualifying round of this season’s UEFA Europa League, despite finishing seventh in La Liga. Sociedad’s most recent appearance in Europe was during the group stages of the 2003-2004 UEFA Champions League.

PSV to Begin Eindhoven

PSV will begin their European campaign against the winners of the match featuring Bulgaria’s PFC Botev Plovdiv and SKN St. Pölten of Austria, with the Austrians making their debut in European competition this season. The match between the two sides finished 2-1 in favour of the Bulgarians in Plovdiv on Thursday night.

The winners of both third qualifying round ties will join Twente and last season’s cup winners, PEC Zwolle in the play-off round.

The first leg of the third qualifying round takes place on July 31st before the return leg a week later on August 7th.
