After only 13 minutes Joel Veltman made a clumsy tackle in the box, and Salzburg were given the chance to open the scoring from the spot, with Jonathan Soriano making no mistake to make it 1-0.

Seven minutes later it was 2-0 as Sadio Mane got in behind Lerin Duarte before rounding Jasper Cillessen and slotting the ball into the empty net.

With ten minutes left of the first half the Amsterdam Arena was stunned as Soriano let fly from the half way line, and the ball drifted over the stranded Cillessen to make it 3-0 for the totally dominant Austrians.

The second half saw no improvement for Ajax as Salzburg continued to dominate, offering the Amsterdam side no time on the ball and the mistakes continued to come.

Luckily for Ajax, Salzburg were unable to take any of their chances in the second half, and the scoreline remained 3-0 at the end, despite the Dutch side barely making it out of their own half. The inquest will now begin for Frank de Boer as he figures out how his side were so soundly beaten.

Ajax exited the Europa League at this stage last season, and barring a miracle in Austria next week, its a case of de ja vu for the Amsterdam side.
