Ten Hag lauded his team’s performance and togetherness and called on his players to finish the job when the second leg takes place in Russia next Thursday.

He said, ”Everything is possible in football and we proved that tonight. We are a real team of 11 players that have clicked together. We have the opportunity to finish off a top European side in Zenit Saint Petersburg.

”We must finish the job off in Saint Petersburg and to do that we will have to play better than tonight. We must have a good plan and it is possible to reach the Europa League group phase.

”My players were up for the fight against a top European side and they work hard together and play dynamic football. We must continue to improve. I will enjoy the victory my team obtained tonight.

”It was a fantastic team performance but there is still 90 minutes to play in this European tie. We must not get caught up in the Euphoria. We are still in August and we need to now look ahead to our next game against Willem II on Sunday.”
