Santos netted his 10th goal of the season from the penalty spot to see off Utrecht on Sunday and raise NEC Nijmegen up to fifth in the Eredivisie table.
After the game coach Ernest Faber was full of praise for his star striker ”When Christian was standing at the penalty spot I was 99 percent sure that the ball would go in”.
”Christian is very cool and calm in front of goal and as far as I am concerned a real penalty killer. We have of course more players that can score but Santos does it for the team. I believe that Christian Santos can play at a higher level because he is very intelligent and he can play really well between the lines and has fantastic timing when he is heading the ball”.
”He also has as great character and is a great professional and let’s not forget he is also an international player for Venezuela. We are happy he is here and we want to keep him here at NEC Nijmegen”.
Having won the Jupiler League ( Dutch first division ) last season with 101 points, NEC Nijmegen only had one goal which was to stay up this season in the Eredivisie. But with the club currently sitting pretty in 5th place with 23 points after 13 games you could be forgiven for thinking that the club are targeting more.
Faber is however remaining grounded, ”If you take into account our budget we have to remain realistic but we are doing very well”. ‘
‘ We are still classed in category 1 in terms of the club finances which means we still have to cover things in order to survive. We have come a long way in a footballing sense and we must keep looking up”.
