According to the club website, van de Looi has chosen not to extend his current deal, therefore sparking an end to a three-year spell as manager of the club where he spent two years as a player.
After his retirement in 2002, van de Looi spent time coaching Groningen’s youth academy before switching to assistant manager in 2010.
Van de Looi took over the reigns in 2013 and in both of his full seasons as manager has lead Groningen to European qualification, becoming the club’s most successful manager in their history by winning their first ever piece of silverware – the KNVB Beker – at the end of the last campaign.
