It was the first European tie for FC Twente in eight years and they got off to a perfect start as Daan Rots headed in the opener after only eight minutes.
On the half-hour mark, Virgil Misidjan pulled the ball back for Michel Vlap to make it 2-0 before Joshua Brenet sealed an excellent first half with a third. The right-back was played through on goal by Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Brenet remained calm to slot the ball into the net.
In the second half, Twente wasn’t as dominant and the hosts pulled one back through Stefan Kovac. However, there was to be no comeback as Twente saw out the rest of the tie and they head into the second leg with a commanding lead.
Should Twente seal their place in the playoff round next week then they will face Serie A side Fiorentina.
