After two draws and a defeat so far in the competition, Ajax desperately needed a win in the Amsterdam Arena against Fenerbahce, but they once again failed to replicate their impressive league form in Europe.
Most of Ajax’s danger in the first half came from the runs of Anwar El Ghazi and Viktor Fischer on the wings, but both were forced off injured before the break. A big worry for Frank de Boer ahead of the tie with Feyenoord at the weekend.
After the break it was Fenerbahce who came closest to snatching the win but substitute Fernandao fired inexplicably wide, while at the other end Amin Younes couldn’t beat Demeril from point blank range.
The draw sees Ajax climb above Celtic into third, but they now need to win their final two group games and hope Fenerbahce lose one of their’s if they are to avoid an early exit.
